Lifeboat Release Mechanism Project

Lead PI: Mr. Dean Pelley
Subject Category: Health, Safety and the Environment

Start Date: Oct 2004
End Date: Apr 2007
Institution / Organization: Mad Rock Marine Solutions Inc.

The Canadian east coast offshore oil industry emphasizes safety as a top priority for its workforce, a priority reflected in Petroleum Research's continuing strategic focus on offshore safety research and development.  In particular, lifeboat safety and accident prevention has been an ongoing concern for the industry.

With funding from Petroleum Research's Transfer to Usability (TTU) program, Dean Pelley and Jason Dawe of Mad Rock Marine Solutions set out to develop a new lifeboat release mechanism.  Over a period of three years, the team developed and rigourously tested prototypes for a new lifeboat hook, resulting in Mad Rock’s new RocLoc technology.

Canadian and SOLAS approved, the RocLoc lifeboat release mechanism can be retro-fitted onto existing lifeboat systems, offers more reliability and better failure warning characteristics.  The RocLoc 6 is designed to be easy to maintain; simple to understand and operate; very stable under a wide range of loading conditions and equipped with superior failure warning characteristics.  It has since received local and international recognition.
