Socio-Economic Benefits From Petroleum Industry Activity in Newfoundland and Labrador, 2005 - 2007

Subject Category: Other

End Date: Feb 2009
Institution / Organization: Stantec (formerly Jacques Whitford

This study documented how the oil and gas industry is transforming the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The research, carried out by Stantec of St. John’s, is an update of previous studies and identifies ways in which the oil and gas industry is benefiting the province, based on oil production, expenditures and employment data from 2005 to 2007. Using the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial government's economic model, it provides a detailed description of the benefits that have accrued to the province.

This update was prepared for Petroleum Research NL with financial support from Petroleum Research NL, the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources, and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP). The work would have not been possible without the assistance of ExxonMobil, Husky Energy, Petro-Canada and Chevron, which compiled most of the data required for the macroeconomic analysis, and the Department of Finance, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, which undertook that analysis.
