Organization: Dr. Wei Qiu (MUN)
Subject Category: Other

Start date: November 2010
End date: October 2016

The "NSERC CREATE for the Offshore Technology Research Training Program", will establish an innovative and collaborative training program that addresses significant scientific challenges in offshore design and operations, and simultaneously train highly qualified personnel (HQPs) for the growing offshore industry. The program aims to build on research strengths associated with Canada's research priority on natural resources and energy as well as the Province's priority on ocean research.

The program will bring together researchers, national and international industry, classification societies, government agencies, and academia to carry out research and provide cohesive, concentrated research and training in offshore oil and gas technology.  Internship opportunities with national and international collaborators will be created to promote interaction of trainees with academic and non-academic research environments.  The combination of practical internships and institutional research and skills development will offer HQPs practical experience in teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, writing, presentation and networking skills, mentoring and career development, toward building highly skilled young professionals with a goal to advance Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore industry.
