Research facilitation and management for Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore industry

Funding Mechanisms

Petroleum Research funds the research it undertakes using one or more of the following mechanisms:

  • Expressions of Interest and Requests for Proposals are direct requests issued by Petroleum Research to address specific industry needs identified by our members;
  • Calls for Proposals are periodically issued by Petroleum Research.  Prospective proponents are requested to offer solutions to one or more challenges within a specified research focus area;
  • Academic Research Funding is awarded by Petroleum Research to faculty, students and postdoctoral fellowes that are working in and learning about issues of interest to Petroleum Research’s members; and,
  • Unsolicited Proposals are accepted from firms or organizations that are seeking support to deliver research that is of value to our members.

Overall value to the oil and gas industry is the core selection criterion that determines which research activities are selected for funding by Petroleum Research.  Other valued attributes include:

  • High quality R&D project management processes with well-defined, focused objectives and clear deliverables;
  • Exportable technologies and technical capabilities (including intellectual property) developed in Newfoundland and Labrador;
  • Growth of relevant local and regional R&D capacity, including development of partnerships and/or international collaboration;
  • The amount of leverage obtained from other funding sources; and,
  • Investment by the project proponent.
